Was ist ein Etmal?

Dazu der "Duden, Deutsches Universal Wörterbuch", 2. Auflage 1989

Die astronomische Navigation mit Sextanten kennt das "Mittagsbesteck", die Positionsbestimmung zur Zeit des lokalen  Sonnenhöchststands als gängige Ortsbestimmung. Die seit dem Mittagsbesteck des Vortags gesegelte Strecke ist das "Etmal" des Tages. Bei Fahrt nach Westen vergeht zwischen zwei Ortsbestimmungen etwas mehr als 24 Stunden, bei Fahrt nach Osten etwas weniger.

Inzwischen ist man mit dem "Etmal" etwas großzügiger. Beim Fahrtensegeln wird oft die Strecke seit der letzten Übernachtung als Etmal bezeichnet.  Bei Offshore-Rennen die in beliebigen 24h Stunden zurückgelegte Strecke, was im englischen als "24 hour distance record" bezeichnet wird. Im Deutschen wird neben "Etmal" auch "24-Stunden-Rekord" verwendet.
